As is with most things in life, I soon discovered there was more than meets the eye :)⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ As it turns out the song's composer, Joseph Kosma started his career in the world of classical music.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Kosma was born in 1905 in Budapest Hungary. He began his musical studies at an early age at the local conservatory, encouraged by his grandmother who had been a student of Franz Liszt.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ He went on to attend the the Academy of Music in Budapest, where he studied with Leo Weiner, and completed his studies in composition and conducting at the Franz Liszt Academy, where he studied with Béla Bartók.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ He spent a brief period of time in Berlin where he was assistant conductor of the Opera, before moving to France in 1933 to escape the Nazi regime.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Upon moving to France, he met poet Jacques Prévert who gave him the opportunity to make a living as he began a new career as a song writer.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Prévert introduced Kosma to film director Jean Renoir (son of impressionist painter Pierre-Auguste Renoir) which lead to Kosma scoring the first of many movie soundtracks for Renoir in 1937.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Throughout his career, Kosma would go on to compose many ballets, operas and move soundtracks - however it is the 80 songs he wrote in collaboration with Prévert that he remains most well known for today. https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/523e061de4b00600a82e4ad7/1642883299646-BZDB346KTL5E01P442EC/IMG_0882+copy.jpg Blog - Autumn Leaves Visual Campaign - Autumn Leaves 7 I mentioned in one of my previous posts, that when it came to the vocal arrangement for Autumn Leaves I decided to follow Eva Cassidy's rendition quite closely as it is what made me originally fall in love with the song.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ However, when it came to the deliver of those vocals, I wanted to put my own spin on things to make it a little more unique to me.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ I decided that I wanted to challenge myself to explore the quieter more controlled side of my vocal range.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ I come form more of a musical theatre/live performance background where the goal is usually to be pretty loud and project to the back of the room.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ For this recording I knew I wanted to go in a completely different direction, and learn some new techniques.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ In addition to using a softer more controlled sound, I also wanted to limit the amount of vibrato used, in attempt to create a more cool introspective and haunting sound.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ While there is some use of vibrato along with a bit of loud belting sound, it is used very sparingly and only at strategic points.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ I must admit, from this start it was a challenge to learn how to sing softly and also still have a supported core sound, but it was so much fun to add these new vocal colours to my tool box of sound :) https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/523e061de4b00600a82e4ad7/1642883329844-Y25HRQ31Z0CXUOWL7B73/IMG_3533.jpg Blog - Autumn Leaves Visual Campaign - Autumn Leaves - 7 "Do small kind deeds for other people, then they will do small kind deeds for other people, and maybe we'll start a chain reaction." ~Fred Rogers⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ On this #worldkindnessday, it only seems fitting to share a quote from someone who spent his career trying to make the world a kinder more understanding place, Mr. Fred Rogers.⠀⠀⠀ In a world that is loud, angry and divided, kindness often seems to go by the wayside - or worse yet, is regarded as a weakness to be exploited. Oh the dangerous line we cross when we stop valuing kindness.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Kindness need not be grand, it need not be fancy. He fell in love with the song, and in 1950 asked American lyricist, songwriter and singer, Jonny Mercer to write English lyrics for the song. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ In addition to writing the lyrics, Mercer also retitled the song, Autumn Leaves. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Over the decades, the song has become a massive hit and repertoire staple for many jazz and mainstream artists throughout the world. As I mentioned in my song release post the other day, my cover of Autumn Leaves was deeply inspired by Eva Cassidy's arrangement of this tune. In fact it was her recording of Autumn Leaves that made me fall in love with the song in the first place.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ If you haven't heard her recordings you should defiantly check them out, you won't be disappointed!⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Cassidy who hailed from the Washington D.C. area was known for her interpretations of jazz, folk and blues music.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ A quiet person with a powerful voice capable of singing in any style, Cassidy was never signed by a record company, as her voice did not fit one distinct marketable genre.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ As a result, she released two self produced albums, and supported herself working as a plant propagator and muralist.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Tragically she died in 1996 at age 33 from melanoma just as her career was starting to gather momentum in the D.C. area.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Two years after her death, Cassidy's music was brought to the attention of British audiences when her recordings were played on BBC Radio 2. E.Y. Harburg, who wrote the lyrics for Over The Rainbow often wove a theme of hope into his works. This was in part due to the fact that he experienced hardship thought his life. He was born the son of poor Jewish immigrants living in New York. He gradually worked his way up, and established a thriving electrical supply business, just to have it whipped out at its peak by the 1929 Great Depression. While devastating on many levels, this also proved to be a creative catalyst for him. He later told the New York Times, "The capitalists saved me in 1929, just as we were worth, oh, about a quarter of a million dollars. Bang! The whole thing blew up. I was left with a pencil and finally had to write for a living." As a writer, his specialty was lyrics that looked for a better tomorrow. He said, "We worked for in our songs a sort of better world, a rainbow world. Now, my generation unfortunately never succeeded in making that rainbow world, so we can't hand it down to you. I've spoken a little bit about the composer's behind Over The Rainbow, but I can't leave out the most iconic vocalist of all time to sing this song, the legendary Miss Judy Garland! Judy Garland was only 16 years old when she first recorded Over The Rainbow on the MGM soundstage in 1938. In an interesting twist, Garland who had already been given the role of Dorthy was almost replaced by Shirley Temple who was considered a bigger box office draw at the time. However Temple was under contract to 20th Century Fox at the time, and she was having a hard time hitting the notes of the songs in rehearsals. This led the studio to keep Garland in the title role. In 1939 Garland received an Academy Juvenal Award for her performance in the Wizard of Oz. Upon accepting the award she was urged to sing Over The Rainbow- which she did - but had a hard time getting through it because she was so excited. Over The Rainbow would go on to become Garland's signature song which she performed for over 35 years. Despite her original recording being entered in the National Recording Registry by the Library of Congress as music that is considered culturally, historically, or artistically significant, her recording never found its way to the singles charts. This such a beloved song, and there are so many amazing renditions out there, it was hard for me to know how exactly to approach it. In the end, I decided that above all else, I wanted it to be warm, and I hope it shows :) As a song that has been inducted into many halls of fame, it has been covered by more artists and more times that I can count! Notable covers include, Tori Amos, Liza Minnelli, Harry Connick Jr., Israel Kamakawiwo'ole, Eva Cassidy, Cliff Richard, Ariana Grande, Patti LaBelle and the Bluebelles, Kathrine McPhee and more. I knew I wanted to create a visual campaign filled with colour, but I wanted to put a slightly non-traditional spin on it. To that end I wanted to create Technicolor though nature, specifically florals. Did you know that Over The Rainbow was almost cut from the movie, The Wizard of Oz? For an advanced screening, the executives at MGM removed Over The Rainbow as they felt it slowed down the film, and it was too far over the heads of the film's intended audience, children. In addition studio head, Louis B. Mayer thought it sounded, "like something for Jaenette MacDonald, not for a little girl singing in a barnyard." Luckily for fans of the song, producer, Mervyn LeRoy associate producer, Arthur Freed, and Judy Garlands's vocal coach, Roger Edens all stepped in to fight for the song. Freed apparently told Mayer, "The song stays - or I go," to which Mayer replied: "Let the boys have the damn song. Put it back in the picture. It can't hurt." It used to play on T.V. every year on evening before U.S. Thanksgiving. While I always loved the story and Dorthy's ruby slippers, I must admit the flying monkey's used to freak me out a bit, haha. "Over The Rainbow" was written by lyricist E.Y. Harburg and composer, Harold Arlen for the 1939 film classic, The Wizard of Oz. The pair who worked together often, created several previous hits including, "It's Only A Paper Moon." Arlen came up with the melody for Over The Rainbow while sitting in his car in front of a Schawb's Drug Store in Hollywood. Harburg hated it at first because he thought it was far too slow. After consulting with Ira Gershwin, Arlen sped up the tempo, after which Harburg wrote the lyrics. 75 years later and the song still beloved classic. In 2001 it was voted the greatest song of the 20th century in a joint survey by the National Endowment for the Arts and the Recording Industry Association of America.
